Lactobacillus acidophilus

Lactobacillus acidophilus

Overview :

Lactobacillus acidophilus , is a gram-positive lactic acid bacterium of the family Lactobacillaceae . As a lactic acid bacterium, it ferments glucose, the simple sugar, into lactic acid , which is also used as the food additive E 270. Since milk is only in the name and has nothing to do with lactose, lactose-intolerant people have nothing to fear. Lactic acid bacteria are among the “good”, health-promoting bacteria that we naturally have in our gut.

Lactobacillus acidophilus finds its use as a probiotic . Probiotics are living microorganisms that, in certain quantities, offer health benefits for example by influencing the intestinal microbiome . This bacterium occurs naturally in our intestines, where it can break down bile acids. L. acidophilus is used as a probiotic. especially used in sour milk products , for example in yoghurts . Since L. acidophilus Because it prefers to live and be active at low pH levels , it survives the acids of the gastrointestinal tract well.

Numerous beneficial effects of the bacterium that have been discovered so far and are interesting as a probiotic:

  • Promotes intestinal health : An imbalance between a healthy gut and the intestinal flora leads to various inflammatory processes in the body. L. acidophilus produces antibacterial peptides that are effective against potentially pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli. Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enteritidis . In addition , L. acidophilus pH , which can also inhibit the growth of many pathogens in the gut, as some prefer a more neutral or alkaline environment. This promotes a healthy balance in the gut.

  • Lowers cholesterol: In some experiments, L. acidophilus has shown cholesterol-lowering effects and an inhibitory effect on atherosclerosis , which can lead to heart attacks due to cholesterol deposits in the blood vessels. Therefore, a supply of L. acidophilus could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

  • Intestinal inflammation: Colitis is a chronic inflammation of the intestine that can be triggered by a disrupted intestinal barrier, an imbalanced intestinal flora, and genetic susceptibility. The main treatment for such intestinal inflammations is probiotics, and L. acidophilus has also proven helpful here. Thanks to the immunomodulatory properties of L. acidophilus , it reduces inflammatory reactions in the body. The protective function of the intestine has also been strengthened in studies with L. acidophilus .

  • Help with diarrhea: In combination with other antibiotics , especially other Lactobacillus species and Bifidobacterium species , L. acidophilus the risk of diarrhea in young children from 32% to 20%.

  • Weight control: By positively influencing intestinal imbalance and other factors, L. acidophilus Supplementation also improved weight loss in mice with obesity and associated diseases . Improvements in energy, sugar, and lipid metabolism were also observed in this regard .

  • Immune system regulation: L. acidophilus shows positive effects on the immune response by influencing inflammatory processes and immune response in some pathogens such as the fungal infection Candida albicans .

  • Cholesterol-lowering : Some laboratory and animal studies show significant reduction of serum cholesterol by L. acidophilus Addition . However, the experiments show differences among themselves, so the specific cholesterol-lowering effect is not yet fully understood from a scientific perspective.

Further studies

Other health benefits found and suspected in studies include :

  • Irritable bowel syndrome: Together with Bifidobacterium animalis ssp . lactis helped L. acidophilus Subjects to relieve the symptoms of chronic irritable bowel syndrome and improve the quality of life, particularly through shorter and milder pain symptoms , as well as other symptom relief.

  • Lactose intolerance: L. acidophilus Studies have shown improved lactose digestion and relieved symptoms such as bloating and diarrhea.

  • Osteoporosis : Age , as well as postmenopause in women , can lead to this bone disease, which causes brittle bones due to porous bones . Its immunomodulatory effect was shown in a mouse study L. acidophilus administration may improve bone architecture and increase mineral density . By influencing the balance of certain immune cells, L. acidophilus as a probiotic, have an osteo-protective effect, especially for women with postmenopausal osteoporosis.

  • Rheumatism: In rheumatoid Arthritis, or rheumatism for short, is an inflammatory joint disease associated with pain and stiffness. The inflammatory reactions can also have harmful effects on other organs. While the exact mechanisms are still unclear, experiments suggest that long-term use of L. acidophilus may help with arthritis by counteracting the inflammatory reactions in the body and thus protecting against more serious damage.

  • Dermatitis: Due to the anti-inflammatory response that L. acidophilus could promote in the body , the probiotic improved the progression of dermatitis, a skin inflammatory disease, in a mouse model.

  • ADHD: In a 3-month study in ADHD subjects aged 6-16, additional supplementation with L. acidophilus When taking the drug Amotextin , improvements in therapy such as in the concentration of children are observed .

  • Liver cancer : Through the production of valeric acid by L. acidophilus , a suppression of the growth of liver cancer cells was observed in mice .

Recommended dosages and instructions for use

The optimal dosage of Lactobacillus acidophilus may vary depending on individual health status and desired effect. Generally, dosages in dietary supplements range between 1 and 2 billion colony-forming units (CFU) per day.

Nutritional recommendations to support the effect

A diet rich in fiber usually supports the effectiveness of probiotics , as prebiotics such as fiber promote the growth and activity of probiotic bacteria in the gut. Foods such as whole grain products, vegetables, and fruit are recommended. Adequate fluid intake should also be ensured.

At AgilNatur e, we have also included prebiotics in our " SynbioticAgil " product, which provides you with probiotics such as Lactobacillus acidophilus , to ensure the best possible effect. Our product SynbioticAgil contains additionally the prebiotic inulin.

Dangers of taking

The intake of Lactobacillus acidophilus is considered safe for health , even in the elderly and children . The risk of developing antibiotic resistance is also considered low . However, in rare cases , some probiotics can cause sepsis, and certain Risk groups. People with weak immune systems and babies are considered to be at risk and should therefore refrain from taking the medication without consulting a doctor.
