Where does cedar oil come from?

Cedarwood essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) or Himalayan cedar (Cedrus deodora) wood chips. The coniferous tree Cedrus atlantica belongs to the cedar genus (Cedrus) in the pine family (Pinaceae). The Atlas cedar grows as an evergreen tree and can reach a height of 40 m. In young trees, loosely conical with an upright shoot at the top, later often multi-stemmed with an irregular crown and spreading branches. The bark is initially gray and smooth, later scaly, somewhat cracked and dark to black-grey. The bark of the non-hanging branches is densely hairy and yellowish. On old shoots, 1.5 to 2.5 cm long needles grow in clusters and standing, barrel-shaped cones.
