    Good to know

Petitgrain Bigarade as a room fragrance and in perfumery

As a room fragrance, the essential oil can have a balancing, calming, strengthening, and stimulating effect. It pushes worries and anxieties into the background. It eases fears and brings clarity to difficult situations. It brings cheerfulness to the atmosphere and increases concentration, helping you overcome challenges.

In cosmetics, petitgrain essential oil is a component of cologne and is used in many cosmetic products, such as fine soaps, to create an orange scent. Because it is similar in scent and effect to the expensive neroli oil, it is often used as a cheaper alternative.

Where does Petitgrain Bigarade come from?

Bitter orange belongs to the genus of citrus fruits (Citrus) in the family Rutaceae in the order Sapindales. Synonyms for bitter orange are bitter orange, Seville orange or sour orange. The bitter orange is a hybrid of the grapefruit (Citrus maxima) and the mandarin (Citrus reticulata) and probably originated in southern China. Petitgrain means "small grain," suggesting the small, unripe fruits that were originally distilled. The additional name "Bigarade" (French: bitter orange) distinguishes the essential oil from the petitgrain oil "Mandarinier", which is obtained from the mandarin tree (Citrus reticulata). In addition to the essential petitgrain oil, the bitter orange also provides bitter orange oil (from the peel) and neroli oil (from the flowers). Today's distribution areas are the Mediterranean region, Brazil and the West Indies. The bitter orange is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 10 m tall. There are thorns in the leaf axils. The tree develops white, strongly scented flowers from which the valuable essential neroli oil can be extracted. The flowers develop into rounded, somewhat flattened fruits for the cold pressing of bitter orange essential oil.

Essential oils also have a pleasant effect and, depending on their notes and scent, can help you relax or concentrate; they can have a calming or comforting effect, or they can be refreshing, invigorating, or energizing. The diverse scents and diverse uses can enhance your well-being and be a wonderful addition to your everyday life. Just give them a try and see for yourself!

How can aromas affect the body?

Aromas can affect your body in several ways. The most obvious way is through the nose: The olfactory nerves transmit the signal to the brain and can thus influence moods.

Another mode of action is through the skin. The molecules of essential oils can pass through cell membranes and the skin, thus reaching the tissue and bloodstream. They are therefore also capable of influencing the body through this route.

A third mode of action is via the stomach: When we eat spices such as peppermint or thyme, which contain essential oils, they reach the stomach and exert their effect via this route.

Are there risks and side effects associated with essential oils? And what's the truth behind the criticism of aromatherapy?

Essential oils should only be used diluted, as high concentrations can cause headaches and allergic reactions

Since essential oils have diverse effects (strong substances with strong effects), they should be used carefully

Aromatherapy is a holistic form of therapy for body and soul. It is difficult to evaluate the therapy scientifically. The sensory and emotional impressions triggered by the oils cannot be objectively measured.
